Feed Your Skin from Within

Our skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside our bodies, so nourishing our skin from within is vital. Whether you suffer with blemishes, acne, dry skin, eczema or any other skin issue, it all starts from the inside out!

Did you know that 70% of our immune system lies in the gut? It is so important to feed our gut with nourishing foods. This not only supports gut health, but also supports our immune system, and in turn can boost skin health.

So, what foods should we be eating to feed our skin?

When our gut is happy, our whole system is happy. Real and whole foods is key here. Eating plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables gives us lots of nutrients that can nourish the skin. The main colours to include would be anything green and orange. For example: carrots, sweet potato, asparagus, celery, broccoli. These foods contain lots of phytonutrients and antioxidants that can protect and strengthen the skin.

Other foods to include would be vitamin C rich foods like berries, peppers, lemons, kiwi, cucumber, cabbage and cauliflower. Vitamin C can improve skin elasticity, supports the immune system and is a powerful antioxidant.

I would also try to include lots of healthy fats in your diet. Essential fatty acids like omega-3 can nourish and hydrate the skin, helping to prevent skin dryness as well as reducing inflammation. Add walnuts, avocados and flax seeds to your diet.

Last but not least, stay hydrated! Drinking water helps the body flush out toxins and plays an important role in digestion and circulation. Our skin is our largest organ and is made up mostly of water. If we aren’t replenishing our water, then it can have an impact on our overall skin health. Drink up! At least 1.5litres of water is recommended. You can add herbs and fruits to your water to give you added health benefits. My favourite infusions include cucumber and mint, rosemary and of course lemon.
